that game. >> well, you're in a fight. it's two great football teams. two gladiators, i guess, just kind of going at it at the end. i'm proud of our guys. we've got 53 guys, mighty men, as we like to call him. as this shirt says right here. and they fought. and we came up a little bit short. as 53. you know, 53 win and 53 lose. but i'm proud of the way we did it. we didn't quite get it done. but that doesn't lessen it. and congratulations to them. they found a way to win the football game. they're a tremendous football team. and we respect them. and we'll be seeing a lot of them. >> tell us a little bit about this game. you knew it was going to be a tight fought game given your style of play and your ability to play defense against a team that can score points. tell me about the x's and o's of this game and what really counted in the end. >> the biggest thing was fundamental football play. i thought we did a good job of handling their hurry-up type offense. they do a great job of finding you and he does a good job of setting the offense against whatever defense you put out there. we were back and forest with disguises. he was changing plays at the

this is 9 news now. 32 yards and the kick, look out! look out! it's no good. >> wide left from the 32, the ravens super bowl hopes end on a missed field goal. hello, i'm bruce johnson. you sought game right here on channel 9, utter disbelief. the ravens could have sent the game against the patriots into overtime with a field goal at the end it. didn't happen. dave owens is here with the highlights and reaction. do you believe it? >> all i can say is wow. we went into this game wondering a lot of things, could the ravens defense come through again, could joe flacco engineer enough offense? let's take a look. 3rd quarter patriots up by 6. what a season for this guy making the catch and leaving

the db in the dust and check out the effort to get into the end zone. 17-16 after the ravens and the refs took a look at it. early parts of the 4th quarter tom brady ran for a touchdown up and above to make it 23-20 new england. late in the 4th flacco pressured and it's incomplete, but the ravens defense forced a 3 and out. from 32 billy cundiff it's a straight shank. look at the faces of the baltimore ravens, utter disbelief. what more can you say? patriots 23, ravens 20. >> obviously tremendous football game, disappointing stunning loss at the end there. congratulations to the patriots, thought they played a great football game. they're a great football team. >> john harbaugh saying stunning. what a scene in foxboro. the patriots on to face the winner of the nfc late game. coming up later in sports much

more from that nail barrett. wusa9 has a new warnship with 99.1 and 106.7 the fan and joining us now is jp flame from the sports junkies. he works at those two radio stations. your impression. i know you're stunned by the field goal. >> that happens to me on the golf course all the time, but that's the guy who was in the pro bowl last season. in the 4th quarter hit his last 14 field goals and just absolutely choked. there's nothing else you could say about that. he choked >> you kind of knew it was coming. you say they didn't trust the guy to do a 50-yard field goal earlier. >> yeah. previous drive vince wolfe was making a great play for them. the 4th down they go for tin stead of going for the field goal. so they didn't have -- it instead of going for the field goal. so they didn't have faith in their kicker, but that's a chip shot. >> what do you think they're doing now? >> i don't think anybody is talking to him. >> did joe flacco step up?

>> they had just one interception, but overall he played fairly well. he put them in position to tie the game and on that 2nd down pass to lee evans that could have won the game right there. lee evans is another guy who is probably wondering look, i could have been in the super bowl if i made this catch. it's the game of missed opportunities down the stretch for the ravens. >> let's look at that field goal one more time. no, no. this is a throw, 4th down. >> 4th downplay and again they go for it because they don't have a chance. there's another missed opportunity right there. evans makes that play, 22 seconds on the clock, tom brady probably doesn't get him back. >> tom brady says and this is a quote, he sucked, the defense saved them today >> i wouldn't say he sucked. he did lead them on many successful drives. he was a little off particularly in the 1st half. he missed gronkowski a few times, but he's in his fifth super bowl. >> the guy's good. thanks a lot for coming in. what are the ravens fans saying

remembering joe paterno who died surrounded by family at the mount nittany medical center. penn state fans have been gathering at statue of the long time coach at state college. the family released a statement saying he died as he lived. he fought hard until the end, stayed positive and only thought of others. scott broom is in state college tonight. scott, what do you have? reporter: here at beaver stadium at the paterno statue at this moment folks are holding vigil with lit candles all around the statue. folks here know that the diagnosis was cancer understanding that that's what he died from, but a lot of them thinking he also died of a broken heart. >> he shouldn't have gone out like this. reporter: there is grief here. >> it's just really sad. reporter: but there's anger and blame, too. >> the stress was just too much for him to handle. i think went out in a very unfair way. >> the best they could do to terminate him is via a phone

call. that's just horrendous. i can't let it go. >> joe paterno is my role model since i was 5 years old. reporter: one student came with life size cutout of the iconic coach. there are candles, signs and flowers. >> it's a shame. reporter: his death rubs the emotions raw all over again. >> so yeah, the way things ended up for him, a little bit of anger, sadness, sorrow. it's a sad day in happy valley. >> don't pray for joe. pray to him. he's a saint. reporter: paterno's death opens up a whole new emotional we don't. how will this university which fired him honor him in death? we got a hint of that this afternoon in a written statement from the acting university president, rodney erickson. he said we grieve for the loss of joe paterno, a great man who made us greater. the candlelight vigil continues tonight here at beaver stadium. live in state college, pennsylvania, scott broom, 9 news now. >> thanks a lot. of course, we'll hear from

scott again tonight at 11:00 on 9 news now. tough for everybody out there. temperatures dropping, rain expected overnight. what does it mean for the monday morning commute? >> bruce, we're seeing some of that mixed precipitation already coming down in portions of virginia. right now inside the beltway we're doing pretty good, a view from the capitol just fine, but temperatures have hovered right around the 30s most of the day. we're sitting around 30, 31 degrees. that pink on the screen is the mixed precip already through culler,ed through fredericksburg and -- through culpeper, through fred burke and it will be streaming our direction. we'll see a milder air move our way monday and tuesday, but before that happens we could be in for a messy commute tomorrow morning. now winds out of the east, northeast about 5 miles per hour. we'll shift the winds as we head toward monday and tuesday. however, the mix precede sip i'm expecting tonight to start

her seat in the house to devote more time to recovery. the arizona democrat was shot and wounded last year in her home district. six people were killed, 13 injured in that senseless attack by a lone gunman. >> i have more work to do on my recovery. so to do what is best for arizona, i will step down this week. >> giffords says she will return to congress sometime in the future. her office says she plans to attend president obama's state of the union address on tuesday. coming up we'll have the forecast, freezing rain tonight, could make for a messy monday morning commute. stay with us.

bet you most people were inside tonight watching football, but for that commute tomorrow could be some problems? >> it could be. folks out later tonight may even have some difficulties heading home. the wintery mix is just now starting to show up on our radar. it's not close to the beltway yet, so that's a good thing, but as we get closer to 8:00, 10:00, things will change and fairly quickly. our temperatures are sitting into the 30s. most of us are feeling a lot cooler because of our winds out of the north and northeast and yes, the wind chill is definitely a factor heading toward the overnight hours. satellite and radar definitely pulling in the cloud cover. we'll keep most of that moisture into mid and late day

tomorrow. here is our futurecast scan. i've forwarded us to the midnight hour where we see the wintery mix along i-95 and toward the west. as we advance that overnight, it does spill over into major portions of our viewing area. depending upon where you are, you will get rain or a mix of that freezing rain and drizzle. keep in mind we have a freezing rain views rei in effect tonight and that will go until -- advisory in effect tonight and that will go until about 6:00 tomorrow morning. i'll show you how things are moving in throughout the area until afternoon. heavy rain is possible at times as we get in wonder late day on your monday but into the overnight and evening things should start to clear out going into tuesday, a much better day as we move through that seven- day forecast. heading into tomorrow morning here's what you need to know there. will be light rain. some of us will see freezing drizzle early morning hours as temperatures hover right around 32 degrees with the north winds. then the temperatures will stay right around 29 degrees as we head through the early morning hours it.

looks like we will see most of that moisture moving through midday and late afternoon for tomorrow and that means tomorrow's highs are a little more on the milder side as we get back to the upper 40s to near 50 degrees for a high. at last check seven-day forecast, it does feature a bit of a warm-up. milder air will come through into the afternoon and evening hours on monday, but it will still be overcast by tuesday looking good, pulling in more sunshine, overnight lows more reasonable. the neck system will bring us rain by tuesday and thursday -- the next system will bring us rain by tuesday and thursday. >> thanks a lot. man, what a day. that's a gut wrenching way to lose a football game, absolutely gut wrenching. ravens and patriots go down to the wire in foxboro. we go inside the ravens locker room and it's a big day in sports, sad news the penn state community mourning the loss of joe paterno. we'll talk about it next.

a dream for most on the precipice of reality for four teams. let's take a look. foxboro, john harbaugh bringing his football team to new england to try to get a win. it was a running game early for new england, not the passing game. joe flacco outstanding, took a lot of heat this week here dancing out of the pocket and finds dennis pitta to take it at 10. torrey smith says sorry, guys i got to go. had a good game three catches 84 yards. 4th quarter tom brady didn't throw a touchdown, he ran one. flacco to lee evans, makes the catch, no, does not complete the process. that's a drop and then billy cundiff shanked it from 32 yards. look at the faces. ed reed can't believe it. neither can joe flacco. patriots win 23-20. >> i thought our guys played their hearts out. we made plays, came up a play or two short at the end, but
